In fact, enrolment in BCS online courses in the Fall 2006 semester rivaled those of the entire 2005-06 academic year.

In Fall 2006 alone, there were 101 students in BCS online courses, as compared to 134 in 2005-06 and 104 in 2004-05.  As in past years, Canadians and Russians make up the largest proportion of BCS enrolments at 52 and 40 respectively.  There are also American, British, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greenlandic, and Norwegian citizens taking BCS online courses this semester through UArctic.

The circumpolar studies program is providing access to university for students in the circumpolar world.  Over three-quarters of BCS students this semester were female and one-fifth of the 101 students enrolled in the online courses self-identified as being of Indigenous descent.

Greg Poelzer, the Dean of Undergraduate Studies at UArctic, is certain of this program’s growth potential. “Our online programming just continues to gain popularity among students in the Circumpolar North.  Many welcome this opportunity for students to study relevant northern topics, from a northern perspective, and in a distance education setting.  UArctic is proud to be able to address previous barriers to post-secondary education for northerners.”
