The successful candidate will be responsible for strategically growing UAF's research enterprise of more than $130 million per year, advancing the research agenda at UAF, and ensuring integration between the research and instructional elements of the University's mission. The position directly supervises the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center, the Geophysical Institute, the Institute of Arctic Biology, and the International Arctic Research Center. In addition to research institutions reporting directly, the Vice Chancellor for Research is responsible for advancing research on the entire campus, such as research activity occurring in schools and colleges reporting to the Provost to include undergraduate and graduate research opportunities in all disciplines.

Job Duties

This position reports directly to the Chancellor of UAF. Principal responsibilities include the following:

- Assist the Chancellor in articulating the overall research mission of UAF;
- Provide leadership for research growth and development by working closely with the University of Alaska Statewide Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, the UAF Chancellor, Provost, Deans, research center and institute Directors, academic departments, and faculty to enhance the University's research enterprise; and
- Act as the UAF liaison with federal agencies in Washington, DC.

The Vice Chancellor for Research oversees the Center for Research Services, which houses the UAF Office of Research Integrity and the UAF Office of Sponsored Programs, which is responsible for proposal and pre-award activity at UAF. Consistent with the mission of a Land Grant institution, the Vice Chancellor for Research ensures that research results are extended into the local communities and works with the Cooperative Extension Service to promote local and state economic development.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for this Position

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; the ability to build and work with teams; the ability to think critically and strategically; an understanding of the diverse research and sponsorship issues facing scholars in all disciplines of the University; accomplishments in collaborating and working with faculty, senior campus leadership, and executive-level personnel from businesses, governments, and other internal and external constituencies; and a broad knowledge of federal regulations and funding agency practices, private sector funding and contracts requirements, and legal compliance requirements. Cultural sensitivity and a demonstrated commitment to diversifying the faculty, students, and administration are expected.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have an earned doctorate in a discipline related to the University's mission or have demonstrated exceptional capabilities in research administration and advocacy, be eligible for a tenured faculty appointment in an academic department of the University, and possess a documented record of funded research and significant personal research accomplishment. This should include a distinguished record of research and administrative leadership; the ability to work collaboratively with research centers, academic units, and other administrative entities within the University system; a record of skill in assisting faculty in the advancement of their research; an understanding of the broad range of research, scholarship, and creative activities associated with a Land Grant university; and extensive management experience leading a major research enterprise in an academic, government, or industry setting.
