Professor at UAkureyri/UWestfjords Discovers a New Ocean Current
Mon, Aug 29, 2011
A new current, the North Icelandic Jet, discovered by
UAkureyri/Uwestfjords professor Steíngrímur Jónsson and his colleague
Héðinn Valdimarsson at the Marine Research Institute Iceland, has raised
attention in the international scientific world. The current has been
measured and mapped by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in
cooperation with the Marine Institute of Iceland. This deep-reaching
ocean circulation system north of Iceland could significantly influence
the ocean’s response to climate change in previously unforeseen ways.
UWestfjords and UAkureyri, with their focus on fisheries and coastal and marine management, are hosting the UArctic Thematic Network on Coastal and Marine Issues. The findings of the research team were published on August 21 in the online issue of the journal Nature Geoscience and has since then been reported widely in the media.
The Woods Hole research ship Knorr, departed from Reykjavík on Monday to continue its research of the current in cooperation with researchers from the Marine Research Institute. The expedition has a website where further information can be obtained and the process followed.
Further information can also be found below, published in various online media, scientific news feeds and web pages.
