The applicants may choose any of the three following main study areas/themes:
1 CLIMATE CHANGE DYNAMICS, IMPACTS AND ADAPTATION
The focus is in the effects of climate change on ecosystems. The forcing factors and feedback processes of climate change are one of the key areas of research to fully understand climate change dynamics and impacts. Research related to adaptation is needed to understand and manage our responses to climate change and related events. Dialogue and collaboration between researchers and actors in environmental governance are needed to predict and give guidelines for the management of northern environmental change.
2 SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
In this theme, researchers focus on technological and management solutions to secure the biodiversity of northern ecosystems, the sustainable use of natural resources and the adaptation to change in the North. The theme bridges scientific concerns about natural resources with management and control in a broader eco-systemic view. The research addresses problems related to land use and water resources, biodiversity, ecosystem services, security of energy supply, sustainable waste management, environmental governance and conflict resolution.
3 HEALTH AND WELLBEING IN NORTHERN COMMUNITIES
Living and working in the changing North is challenging to humans and communities. Securing human health and wellbeing requires a trans-disciplinary approach. This research group investigates health and wellbeing in the northern communities on individual, community and group levels, and impacts and responses of human communities to global, economic, environmental and technological changes in the North, and their effects on individual and community health and wellbeing.
