The Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Area – Yugra is the biggest oil-producing region in Russia. Over 50% of Russian oil is produced here. Along with apparent advantages this arises certain challenges for the region. Ecological problems, damage of lands of traditional farming (reindeer pasturing), migration of population and development of oil and gas sector at the expense of neglecting other industries are on the local agenda of sustainable development in Yugra.
Participants of the summer school will learn about the existing challenges and find out about future of other sectors such as tourism, forestry and agriculture that are being actively developed in Yugra nowadays. The question, which is to be answered during the summer school, is whether the region has future after its oil and gas resources are depleted.
Students from all countries studying ecological management, geography, social science, journalism, anthropology and other are encouraged to apply for participation. The deadline is May, 1. Working language is English.
The curricula of the summer school will include lectures, workshops, round tables with local authorities and representatives of mass media, business, cultural and educational institutions. Besides, daily course of Russian language will be provided. Big social and cultural program will comprise city tours, visiting camps of local indigenous peoples and oil-fields that are in operation.
The eligibility criteria are:
- enrolment at some educational program (Bachelor, Master, PhD);
- age ≥ 18;
- good command of English;
- interest in topics of the summer school.
The registration fee is 950 euro per person. This includes:
- accomodation (student dormitory);
- meals;
- course of Russian language;
- tuition fee;
- social and cultural program.
Besides 8 DAAD scholarships of 1,475 euro, several scholarships are provided by Yugra State University. The amount is 450 euro, which means that the participants who get them would pay 500 euro only as their registartion fee.

The international summer school “Prospects for Sustainable Development of the Oil-Producing Region of Yugra” will take place in Yugra State University, Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia on 18 – 31August, 2014.
