Sámi Museum Siida is an award-winning museum situated alongside the picturesque Juutuanjoki River. It comprises several temporary and online exhibitions alongside the following permanent three:

  • Permanent Exhibition: Sámi culture and northern nature.
  • Open-Air Museum: An area of around 50 buildings and structures that provide a glimpse into Sámi livelihoods and architecture.
  • Skolt Sámi Heritage House: Comprises an authentic Koltta homestead and accompanying outbuilding, with an exhibition detailing Skolt Sámi life as it was and is.

 

More about Siida

Siida Sámi Museum and Nature Center is located in Inari, Finland, and is a key cultural and natural heritage center focused on the Sámi people, their history, and the environment of Finnish Lapland. The museum was established in 1959, with the aim of preserving and showcasing the Sámi culture, traditions, and way of life.

Permanent Exhibition

The museum's permanent exhibition offers visitors a comprehensive view of the Sámi people's history, culture, and relationship with nature. It includes displays about Sámi traditions, clothing, handicrafts, and tools, as well as the impact of modern society on their way of life. The exhibition also highlights the diverse ecosystems of Lapland, from the Arctic tundra to the lush forests, offering a rich understanding of the region's flora and fauna.

Skolt Sami Heritage House

A unique feature of Siida is the Skolt Sámi Heritage House, which is dedicated to the Skolt Sámi, one of the branches of the Sámi people. The heritage house showcases the history, language, and cultural practices of the Skolt Sámi.

Open-Air Museum

Siida also features an open-air museum where visitors can explore traditional Sámi structures. These give a tangible sense of the traditional everyday lives of the Sámi people, as well as their connection to the environment.

History & Events

Siida’s history is deeply rooted in the Sámi cultural preservation, and the museum has grown over the years into a significant institution. It is an important venue for events related to Sámi culture, art, and traditions. Throughout the year, Siida hosts various exhibitions, workshops, and performances, especially around major Sámi cultural dates like the Sámi National Day in February.
