PEOPLE 2025 – Challenges and Opportunities in Environmental Sustainability under Climate Change

The following is Paul Pellas's Autumn 2024 student mobility story, who went on exchange from Tampere University to the University of Saskatchewan.

UArctic and the Arctic Circle are pleased to open the call for nominations for the 2025 Frederik Paulsen Arctic Academic Action Award. The Award includes a 100,000 euro grant to a promising project that addresses climate change through concrete actions and plans. The call is open until April 30, 2025.

Seminar: "Global Challenges, Local Struggles: Dissecting Arctic Climate Change and Indigenous Peoples Adaptation in Nunatsiavut" will be held online, February 10, 2025, 12-1pm (MST). Speaker: Ishfaq Hussain Malik, University of Leeds (UK).

The Nunataryk EU-funded project researchers, many of whom are also members of Thematic Network of Health and Wellbeing in the Arctic, recently published an article in Springer Nature journal Communications earth & environment entitled “A transdisciplinary, comparative analysis reveals key risks from Arctic permafrost thaw”.

Professor Dimitrios Dalaklis from World Maritime University has been appointed as the UArctic Chair in Search and Rescue for the next five years

The following is Miriam Jauhiainen's Autumn 2024 student mobility story, who went on exchange from Tampere University to the University of Strathclyde.

The UArctic Entrepreneurship Fund (UEF), an initiative of the Managing Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises in the North Thematic Network, supports innovative, community-focused business ideas that drive sustainable development in the Arctic.

The second Thematic Networks Success Story is from the Thematic Network on Decolonization of Arctic Library and Archives Metadata (DALAM).

A recently launched website, "the UArctic library of climate interventions", will serve as a comprehensive knowledge base with expert reviews of potential climate solutions, providing information on their feasibility, risks, and potential benefits, while remaining neutral on whether they should be implemented.

The Arctic Research Center (ARC) at Hokkaido University (HU) invites registration for the First Asia Arctic Conference (AAC) of the Asia-Arctic Network for Research and Education (AANRE). This hybrid conference will take place 13-14 February 2025 at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan and online.

Angel Ellis and US Embassy visit Rovaniemi and the University of Lapland (ULapland) to tour university studios, talk with university professors and students, and air the American Film Showcase (AFS) film BAD PRESS.

Recently, Nicole Bonnett and S. Jeff Birchall  from the University of Alberta (Canada), and the UArctic Thematic Network on Local-scale Planning, Climate Change and Resilience, published "Local planning for climate induced relocation: A systematic review", with the International Journal of Disaster Risk Reduction.
