Help advance knowledge and identify solutions to major Arctic problems

Homes at risk in coastal Alaska because of permafrost thawing. Reindeer starving to death because icy ground prevents them from finding food. The coldest place on Earth – Siberia – seeing record heatwaves of nearly +40°C.

These are not future scenarios but already reality for people in the Arctic, and with climate change advancing quickly, the problems will only become worse. To find solutions to these and other equally complex issues, we need highly specialized, focused, in-depth knowledge – the kind of expertise that is often the specialty of a single researcher or a small team.

But such expertise is nearly always scattered around the world, and it is only rarely – if ever – that the experts meet to compare their findings and look at the problems from multiple angles. Because many funding mechanisms are guided by national agendas and regional priorities, bringing these people together happens too little. This limits the scope of studies, and prevents wider engagement and conversation.

The UArctic advantage

UArctic members are part of the life, the people and the communities who face climate change and the resulting problems. Through our members and partners in Arctic countries and beyond, we have the reach and the expertise required to push knowledge and science forward – the knowledge we need to create lasting solutions.

UArctic seminars address present and emerging needs that are relevant to the Arctic. In these seminars, we proactively bring together people who wouldn’t normally meet: leading scientists, practitioners, students, holders of traditional knowledge. By pooling knowledge from various groups and exchanging best practices from the field, we create new collaboration and more innovative models to tackle the problems we are already facing. And to make sure that the seminars truly make a difference, they result in follow-up actions, investments, or new policies – concrete solutions or improved ways forward.

How you can help

Your support can help cover travel and accommodation costs for researchers, youth, and indigenous knowledge holders. Your donation can also help offset costs related to organizing the seminars, such as booking the venue and providing meals.
