Help students and early-career researchers form their future careers
Youth around the world have demonstrated that they are eager to tackle the challenges of climate change and discover solutions for sustainable development. In the Arctic, thousands of students and early-career researchers are looking for projects and programs where they can invest their passion and talents to help make a better future for the region and the world.
But when meetings and events are organized to discuss and advance issues that are critical to the Arctic and its future, students and early-career professionals are often unable to join. They are typically self-funded, and when the costs include roundtrip international airfare and several nights of lodging, the opportunity is out of reach. Many events end up lacking in youth participation.
If we want to make real progress, it is essential to have their voices at the table. Joining in meetings, conferences and events allows students and early-career researchers to learn from the best in their fields, and meet future collaborators, decision makers and leaders. It also enables them to develop leadership skills, form lifelong relationships, and establish networks of their own.
The UArctic advantage
With over 200 member institutions, three quarters of them in higher education, UArctic has great potential to reach out to and bring in students and early-career researchers who want to make a difference. Using our own events, such as the UArctic Congress, and the events organized by our partners as a platform, we can ensure that youth have a significant voice in discussions that matter.
Since our programs often engage not only academics but also Indigenous representatives, university leadership and politicians, students will have the opportunity to have meaningful exchanges with them and introduce fresh perspectives. Rather than having students and early-career researchers just listen from the audience, we want to see them take the floor and share their solutions.
How you can help
Your support can help offset registration fees and provide travel stipends to students and early-career professionals. It also helps raise awareness of the various conferences, meetings and other networking and learning opportunities available to them. Your donation can also support the development of events and sessions designed specifically for students, and training and mentoring opportunities that will help them in their future careers.
